Office papers that start and end in recycling

Steinbeis Papier was one of 31 nominees for the renowned German Federal Ecodesign Award in the Product category, which acknowledges ecological design pioneers. The prize has been awarded annually since 2012 by the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) in conjunction with the International Design Centre Berlin (IDZ). The winners are proof that environmental compatibility and good design are not mutually exclusive. The Award promotes innovation and helps businesses launch ecological products with effective publicity. The contest is by no means limited to specific industries; it deliberately considers a colourful range of different contributions. Competition entries have to demonstrate high-quality design and environmental compatibility throughout their life cycles, as well as a high level of innovation.

This is precisely the attitude Steinbeis took in converting its factory into an ecologically integrated industrial site. The key principles: conserving resources through the use of 100% reclaimed paper, increasing resource efficiency/productivity through cascading use, exploiting the potential of the circular economy, extending product life cycles from product design to recycling, and manufacturing and recycling according to cradle-to-cradle principles. Starting with used material, Steinbeis employs state-of-the-art technology to produce a high-quality, high-tech product with maximum ecological savings in the areas of water, energy, raw materials and carbon management. Steinbeis papers help companies and public authorities improve their carbon balance and noticeably reduce their overall ecological footprint.

With its raw material and procurement concepts, new production standards and technologies, Steinbeis has created a range of office papers that encourage industry and consumer markets to rethink and that have significantly influenced the development of the recycled paper market. As a driving force behind a forward-looking industry, Steinbeis is guided by the principles of resource efficiency, climate protection and recycling, which is how it promotes a sustainable transformation of the economy. “In an economic milieu of billion-dollar corporations that dominate the global paper market, mid-sized Steinbeis Papier offers an ecological and economical alternative to conventional virgin papers. It’s good news for us that more and more buyers and consumers want to reduce their carbon footprints. The Blue Angel photocopying papers produced by Steinbeis meet this consumer demand,” says Ulrich Feuersinger, Managing Director of Steinbeis Papier GmbH.

The sustainable paper manufacturer based in Glückstadt stood out from over 300 participating companies. Steinbeis is proud to have been nominated.
